How To Have A Positive Mindset While Healing

In Holistic Tools & Strategies, Lifestyle Practices

Many patients ask me how to have a positive mindset while healing from chronic illness.  It’s a common struggle!  A realistic yet positive mindset can make all the difference in staying true to your health commitments even on days when your body and mind are not feeling well.   Approaching your healing process with a positive mindset sets you up for long term success.

Fortunately, we have many tools to show you how to change your mindset from negative to positive.  Remember this is a practice and a process – day to day and moment to moment.

1. Turn a burdensome diagnosis into PROJECT VITALITY.

Dealing with complex illness can feel like an insurmountable burden.  Reframe the task of healing.  Make it a pro-active life project, and give it a name.  I consider my personal health a lifelong project, and call it Project Vitality.  I write down my goals (what I am working towards, as specifically as possible), intentions (how I want to feel).  Then I keep track of what’s actually happening on an almost daily basis.  This allows me to objectively assess how I am doing, where I am picking up momentum and where I am stuck.  From there, I can celebrate and problem solve.  This practice supports objectivity (rather than emotional reactivity to the ups and downs we experience).  It also empowers us to take ownership of our own healing, and overcome a sense of helplessness.

2. Live Deliberately.

Take time to reflect and acknowledge the factors and influences that DON’T currently support your health and healing.  If something doesn’t truly nourish your body, mind or soul and support how to change your mindset to positive, then get rid of it!  Choose your food, relationships, environment and activities deliberately, so that every part of your life counts in support of your health,  alignment, and positive mindset.  (Warning:  don’t get overwhelmed!  If there are many negative influences that come to mind, take it one at a time.  Keep a list in your Project Vitality notebook.  Remember, this is a process!)

3. Did I mention that this is a process?

Changing your mindset from negative to positive while healing from complex illness is a process.  Healing consists of many small steps and transitions. Learning how to keep a positive mindset is itself part of healing the mind and the negative mental and social patterns that we were taught and grew up with.  Know that you are in the midst of a deep and significant transformation and awakening process.  Chronic illness is a trigger for great learning and spiritual growth.  Don’t expect the path you are walking to be easy.  Instead, hold yourself compassionately and proceed at the pace your body, emotions and spirit can handle.

4. A Clean Brain Is A Positive Brain

On the physical level, many people experience negativity, irritability, depression, and “toxic” emotions because their brain is inflamed and whole body is toxic.  Detoxification, particularly opening the eliminative pathways, helps the body and brain to clear out the toxins and inflammatory factors that drive negative emotions.  If you’d like to learn more about detoxification of the body and mind, check out our 8 week course, Detox For Lyme.

5. Value where you’re at, because Life is your Friend and your Teacher.

Don’t just value the goal you want to achieve, but also the place where you’re at – emotionally, physically, in every way, because it has much to teach you and it is what you must face in order to grow. There is a lot to learn from a place of disease, disorder and chaos!

6. LYME stands for Love Yourself More Everyday.

This is one friend’s meaning for her struggle with Lyme disease. Invent your own mantra-acronym to give meaning to what you are facing.

7. Be in conversation with your body. Ask – “What is this telling me?”

Pain, tension, symptoms or disease signifies that something significant in you or your life is not aligned, that wants to re-align. Accelerate your healing by tuning in to your body’s innate wisdom and intuition; develop your heart as an organ of perception.

Highest belief8. Always ask, “What’s the highest belief I could hold about this situation?”

When what you choose to believe expresses trust and faith in a positive outcome, love, and compassion for yourself and others, then that is the health-generating chemical soup your cells will bathe in every day.

9. Evaluate – Upgrade – Implement.

This process is, in a nutshell, the way to organically step up and into your next level of health and emotional patterning over and over again.

10. Stay. With. It.

Be committed to your health practices and a healing mindset for the long-term, because there will always be ups and downs along the way.

Great advice! Number 1 really hits the nail on the head. If it isn’t nourishing, it isn’t helping! Lyme is so hard to beat, but with the right tools, we can still let our bodies heal well enough to keep enjoying life.
